February 16, 2017The Canada Border Services Agency announced today that there is potential for a strike of thousands of Canada Border Services Agency workers after talks broke off between Treasury Board and the Public Service Alliance of Canada over compensation issues.After three days of mediation both parties have reached an impasse. A mediator will now present arguments from both parties with a recommendation to the Public Interest Commission.Should this effort fail the union will move “slowly, but surely into a strike vote,” said Jean-Pierre Fortin, national president of the customs and immigration union PSAC that represents more than 8,000 CBSA workers across Canada.Frontline CBSA workers have been without a contract since June 2014. This latest round of negotiations calls for compensation to be more aligned with other law enforcement agencies, such as the RCMP. The union is also demanding early retirement for CBSA workers and fairer discipline procedures.The impact of a potential strike is yet unknown.We will advise further details when available.
