Last week President Trump issued a series of posts on Truth Social stating tariffs were imminent for specific pharmaceutical, furniture, and heavy trucks. The start date for each of the sectors was stated to be October 1st, just two days from this writing.
No official executive order, proclamation, or federal register notices has been published confirming details of the Truth Social postings, leaving the trade community wondering exactly what US HTS codes will be impacted.
Regarding pharmaceuticals the President stated the tariff would be “100% tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product, unless a company is building their pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in America.” Emphasis was placed on “is building” as “breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction.”
An additional furniture posting was issued today on the social platform which can be seen here. The post commented on North Carolina’s furniture market being adversely impacted by trade practices in China and other countries. The furniture tariff is said to hit kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and associated products at a 50% tariff rate. Additionally, a 30% tariff will be placed on upholstered furniture.
Finally, as stated by the President the heavy truck tariff of 25% is related to national security. This comes as no surprise as heavy trucks and their parts have been part of an ongoing Section 232 investigation since April 2025.
