UPDATE: CBP Challenges Vague Cargo Descriptions
Posted on Apr 11

Article by: Rick Walker, Vice President, Trade Insights, LCB/CCS
On April 10, CBP issued an update to the below notice with CSMS#60144714 which can be found here. In this update, they added some additional text, including the following:
Entry filers who do not file the bill data should also be advised that the notification message will indicate that the entry transaction, which has a 10-digit Harmonized Tarriff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) classification, is associated with a bill that included an unacceptably vague cargo description. The entry filer is required to demonstrate upon request how the classification was determined.
The update also listed a site where interested parties can see examples of unacceptable cargo descriptions. Keep in mind that cargo descriptions may not suffice for commercial invoice descriptions which typically require more detailed information for entry classification purposes.
