Port of New York and New Jersey Predicts Further Rail Delays
Posted on Feb 2
The Port of New York & New Jersey advises that the back-up of import cargo at the port rail terminal caused by inclement weather in the Midwest could last up to another two weeks.Snow and ice in Chicago and other midwestern inland points disrupted train schedules and slowed the return of empty railcars to the port, creating a railcar shortage in the port that created a container buildup.Shippers that tried to move their cargo from rail to truck ran into complications as the general truck driver shortage and the newly implemented electronic logging device (ELD) mandate reduced the amount of extra drivers available to handle the increased demand. The Port Authority is working with rail carriers to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and it expects to be back to normal schedule within the next two weeks. For information about specific shipments please contact your V.
