Ocean Freight Market Faces Record Deliveries Of Ultra-Large Containerships

Although some carriers deferred deliveries of ultra-large containerships (ULCs) this year, 2018 will see a record number of these vessels being added to the worldwide container fleet.January alone will see deliveries of 7 vessels in the 19,000 – 21,000 TEU class, as well as 3 vessels in the 14,000 – 15,000 TEU class.A total of 1.5 million TEU are expected to join the existing capacity, with over 80% expected for be delivered in the first half of 2018, and over 50% of that growth coming from vessels in the ULC class.Overall the global containership capacity is expected to grow by 5.6% to 22.28 million TEU.
