First Ship To Pass Under The Raised Bayonne Bridge At The Ports Of NY-NJ
Posted on Jun 19
The first vessel to pass under the raised Bayonne Bridge to move into the Ports of New York/New Jersey will be the 10,000 TEU “Zim Antwerp” when it arrives there on June 26th.With the bridge elevation vessels with capacities of up to 18,000 TEUs will now be able to move to the four major port terminals in the ports complex. Prior to the elevation vessels exceeding 9,800 TEUs were not able to proceed as the bridge’s height of 151 feet was too lot to accommodate vessels with larger capacity. The ports hope that this will be the start of mega-vessels calling the ports, enabling them to regain some of the volume share they lost in the past due to the limitations, after seeing its share of the Asian import market fall 8.5% at the start of 2017.More information about the bridge elevation can be found on the port’s website at http://www.panynj.gov/press-room/press-item.cfm?headLine_id=2721.
