Case Study: U.T. Battelle, LC

November 11, 2010   |   Case Study

U.T. Battelle, LLC was established in 2000 as a private not-for-profit company for the sole purpose of managing and operating The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (“ORNL”) for the U.S. Department of Energy. Formed as a 50-50 limited liability partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle is the legal entity responsible for delivering the Department of Energy’s research mission at ORNL.

UT-Battelle's plan for ORNL is guided by the commitment to achieving Simultaneous Excellence in the areas of Science and Technology, Laboratory Operations, Spallation Neutron Source, Physical and Computational Sciences, Energy and Engineering Technologies, Biological and Environmental Sciences, National Security, Communications and External Relations.

When U.T. Battelle needed to urgently import a ballistic containment device from Canada, they turned to V. Alexander to arrange the Customs clearance at the US-Canada border in Sweetwater, Montana. V. Alexander specializes in Canadian border clearances clearing cargo at many border crossings every day and night. When the containment device arrived at the border, Customs selected it for an intensive examination and requested additional information. V. Alexander’s dedicated staff was in contact with Customs, the trucking company, and UT-Battelle throughout the night, and was able to secure the information that Customs required. Customs cleared the shipment and the truck was sent on the way to its final destination in Oak Ridge, Tennessee arriving on schedule.

V. Alexander was able to provide UT-Battelle with the Customs brokerage services they required at the Canadian border to ensure on time delivery of their critical cargo.
